Shift Building Operator - Building Engineer (HVAC)

About the role

The Shift Building Operator – Building Engineer (HVAC) reports to the Director of Engineering & Facility Operations and is responsible for the safe, efficient operation, installation, maintenance and repair of the hotel’s heating, ventilation, air‑conditioning, refrigeration and related mechanical systems. The role ensures guest comfort and upholds operational standards across the property.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct daily inspections and walkthroughs of HVAC, refrigeration and mechanical equipment; operate, troubleshoot and repair air handling units, fan coil units, mini‑splits, chilled water systems, pumps and ventilation controls.
• Perform preventative maintenance, log performance data, track utility consumption and manage work orders through the CMMS.
• Monitor and operate the Building Automation System (BAS) to optimise equipment performance, respond to alarms and recommend energy‑saving improvements.
• Coordinate with contractors and vendors for specialised HVAC repairs and maintain accurate asset records.
• Ensure compliance with refrigerant handling regulations, safety procedures (lockout/tagout, fall protection, confined‑space entry) and respond to emergency situations.

Required profile

• Minimum 2 years of experience in HVAC operations, maintenance or building engineering, preferably in a hotel or similar hospitality environment.
• High school diploma or equivalent with a valid HVAC certification/trade qualification and a Bermuda Refrigerant Handlers Permit.
• Proven ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, control drawings and technical manuals.
• Strong organizational, communication and problem‑solving skills; ability to work independently and as part of a team.
