Head of Aviation Security

About the role

The Head of Aviation Security reports to the Director, Airport Operations and is accountable for maintaining a high level of security at L.F. Wade International Airport (LFWIA). The role carries out safety and security policies in line with international regulatory requirements (OTARs 178, 179 and 180) and the Civil Airport Act 1949, monitors security contractors, investigates security incidents and issues security and access passes.

Key responsibilities

• Develop, direct and implement the airport/aviation security programme, including operational plans, SOPs and a memorandum of agreement with the Bermuda Police Service
• Manage the restricted area pass system, the General Security Awareness Training programme and the quality control of security agencies
• Monitor physical barriers, surveillance and access control systems, and advise the Accountable Manager, President and Director on security matters
• Supervise the Assistant Aviation Security Officer and manage security contractors for passenger screening, screening and airside patrols, including hiring, promotion and termination decisions
• Manage the security access control system and access passes, and supervise the Airport Operations Administrator
• Take part in the annual budget process and provide monthly security data reports
• Oversee the security elements of emergency plans, the emergency coordination centre and periodic drills, working with the police, fire and rescue and other stakeholders
• Handle security-related SMS issues, advise on terminal development and boundary maintenance, and manage disciplinary measures for contractual and section staff

Required profile

• Firm understanding of the Civil Airports Act 1949, ASSI and international requirements such as ICAO and US TSA
• Able to liaise with airport users, airline station managers, ASSI, BCAA and BAA personnel and explain security requirements and audit reviews
• Ability to monitor security agencies for compliance and give feedback and motivation
